DESCRIPTION:How we assess goals to see if they are actionable\, attainable\, and realistic? In this training\, participants will learn how to format their goals as SMART goals\, which will help them learn to break down goals into steps they can achieve. We’ll work on different examples from within workspaces\, in social settings\, and in our personal lives\, tackle activities that have us looking deeper into our interests\, and end the session by having 1 to 3 goals that we want to work on in the short term. DESCRIPTION:Participants will build off the previous lesson on reasonable accommodations by getting the opportunity to test in real time low-to-mid tech options they can use in the community and on a worksite. We’ll roleplay the disclosure process and practice making an accommodation request\, creating tools that we can utilize in the future to support us during those processes. We’ll test our understanding of accommodations by matching a potential accommodation to a specific task or barrier and will complete the training by drafting our own individual Accommodations List that can be provided to loved ones\, VR counselors\, and employers. SUMMARY:Independence Through Resilience- Identifying Triggers\, Naming our Emotions
DESCRIPTION:Participants will recognize what our disabilities are and have a clearer understanding of how they impact us\, we’ll learn about various types of sensory or emotional triggers\, review tools for communicating our needs and experiences\, and begin to dive into the topic of emotional regulation. By learning how to identify our triggers and communicate our symptoms\, experiences\, and needs\, participants will be better equipped at articulating their disability and any related barriers or limitations to others in professional\, medical\, and personal settings.

SUMMARY:Youth Transition Program – Structuring our Goals
DESCRIPTION:Youth from Clear Brook HS and Clear Falls HS will learn how to take a goal and break it down into manageable steps. We’ll walk through a sample SMART goal\, collaborating as a group to determine the steps needed to accomplish the goal. The group will work together to draw\, write\, and discuss for each sample goal a reasonable time frame and the steps required to achieve the desired outcome of the example goals. By breaking down the steps of sample goals together as a group\, participants will have increased confidence and capacity in breaking down their own collective and individual goals as students.

SUMMARY:Cooking Class – Chicken Caesar Salad
DESCRIPTION:Participant will practice their knife skills by helping make Chicken Caesar Salad. They will review the recipe before starting\, gather and measure ingredients\, follow recipe steps\, and clean-up directions. Participant will get to taste their finished product and take home a copy of the step-by-step recipe (including clean-up directions) if wanted. This will enable the individual to be better equipped for independently making a Lunch or Dinner meal. NOTE: This class will be Gluten Free.

We’ll take a dive into common experiences folks have with anxiety\, be able to identify specific symptoms and barriers we each deal with\, share our experiences in a peer support format\, and begin to implement a group awareness activity for tracking our symptoms and barriers\, as well as what prompts them. By participating in this training and practicing awareness skills in between training sessions\, participants will have a clearer understanding of their disability\, how it affects their day-to-day life\, and have the ability to begin disclosing their experiences and needs relating to their disability with others.

DESCRIPTION:Participants will meet MHI staff at the Walter Hall Park pavilion for a picnic and a game of Two Truths and a Lie. Participant needs to bring a sack lunch and come prepared to honor National Debunking Day by sharing two truths and one lie about yourself. Other participants will take turns guessing which statement is not true. This outing will lead to greater connections with peers and possible new friendships while out socializing in the community.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Connection – Kemah Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Participants will meet MHI staff at the Kemah Aquarium on the Kemah Boardwalk. The aquarium is home to a wide variety of fish\, sharks\, stingrays and more. Participants will have a chance to pet the stingrays and shop in the gift store.  By participating in this Tuesday Connection event\, participants will be out in their community socializing with their peers\, discovering the wonder and mystery of the underwater world\, and strengthening their communication and social skills.  Participant cost for the aquarium\, guided tour\, rainforest education\, and petting the stingrays will be $14. If wanted\, participants may bring additional money to make purchases in the gift store.
